| | Cervical traction can be an invaluable aid in treating neck disorders caused by conditions such as muscle spasm, nerve root compression, degenerative joint disease, osteoarthritis, cervical spondylosis, myofascial syndrome and facet joint dysfunction. Cervical traction is used to apply a stretch to muscles, ligaments, and tissue components of the cervical spine. By promoting separation of the intervertabral joint space, cervical traction provides much needed relief.
This type of traction treatment is most commonly used with the patient in the supine position with the neck placed at 20-30 degrees of flexion. Applying traction with the patient in this position helps stretch the posterior neck muscles and facilitates intervertabral separation, which relieves pressure that may be pinching nerves. Physicians also prescribe home traction programs for chronic cervical pain patients. This encourages continued treatment and self-management. These systems come in different varieties, such as over the door traction units and cervical collar/ halo systems.
Persistent neck pain is often difficult to alleviate. Cervical traction is sometimes an integral component of treatment. At home systems, this cervical traction can provide much needed relief when the patient most needs it. | | |
